Submit CV: Trainee Communications Officer at South African Airways

South African Airways (SAA) is looking for a Trainee Communications Officer. The position will be based at OR Tambo Airport, Kempton Park. It is a training position and does not guarantee employment once the Training is finalised.

The Trainee Communications Officer role reports directly to the Duty Manager OCC, in the provision of support services to the entire SAA Global Operations community. The incumbent of this role will train to acquire knowledge to establish, monitor and maintain ground to air communication for all SAA airborne aircrafts operating to various destinations around the world.

Lastly, as part of the Global team, the role will be required to support the optimization of the safe operational function whilst ensuring all communication is facilitated to promote on time performance.

The successful candidate will be trained to:

  • Facilitate a joint decision making process with various departments in the operational environment ensuring minimum discomfort to the passenger whilst maximizing revenue earning potential by applying the following operational schedule recovery techniques
  • Ensure effective communication between all sections, to maximize co-operation and minimize delays
  • Initiate and coordinate operations during baggage reconciliation/ mandatory security check and continuously monitoring of the operations schedule as well disseminating telexes as a means of primary communication with outstations
  • Negotiate preferred / alternate parking bay for loading and inform relevant parties of changes
  • Facilitate logistical service supply to minimize delays and establish serviceability status of aircraft for the specific planning period
  • Prepare and report on significant operational occurrences and incidents
  • Monitor and coordinate late boarding of passengers
  • Slot co-ordination and negotiation of lost slots with ATNS based on operational functionality
  • Negotiate &Monitor parking bays allocation with ACSA
  • Communicate parking bay changes to all the relevant departments and update MCS
  • Attend Delay Management Forum to provide an account of events for significant occurrences
  • Establish duration of adverse conditions, gather all information that will lead to schedule disruption, e.g. aircraft diversions, report to Manager on Duty
  • Gather all relevant information about technical snags, inform Manager on duty and Technical Advisor
  • Arrange alternate crew or standby crew; co-ordinate with relevant departments to ensure quick turnaround

Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with a pass in Mathematics HG(E) or SG (D)
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Operations Management at NQF level 5 will be an advantage
  • A minimum of 6 – 12 months experience in Airline Operational Environment will be an advantage
