Internship 2018 @MSF_southafrica (Doctors without Borders)

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made  disasters, or to people that are excluded  from access to health care. The organisation has health projects in more than 70 countries. MSF South Africa is located in Johannesburg with an office in Cape Town.

The MSF SA (Doctors without Borders) is looking for the following interns to join its team.

1. HIV Policy Advocacy Intern

MSF Southern Africa is looking for an HIV Policy Advocacy Intern. The ideal candidate will have good planning and administrative skills, be flexible in terms of availability and in terms of tasks to be carried out and must have a demonstrated ability to work under pressure with competing priorities while delivering results.

Requirements

  • Minimum university graduate or post graduate student.
  • Preferably studying Public Health, Development Studies, International Relations or Political Science, or with demonstrable interest in working in the Health Policy Analysis and Advocacy field.
  • Knowledge of  regional health policy landscape, regional Health/HIV related organisations, Donors and civil society organisations
  • Interest in national and global health policy and organisations particularly related to HIV.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point essential
  • Professional telephone manner, tactful and excellent networking and negotiation skills.
  • Creative and highly flexible approach to work, and ability to work within a team, multi task and good stress management skills and ability to deal with high workload at specific times.
  • Creative social media skills
  • Previous MSF experience an advantage

2. Social Media Intern

The Social Media Intern at MSF Southern Africa will be instrumental in helping the organisation raise awareness and engagement using MSF SA’s social channels. The intern will also be expected to contribute towards MSF’s objective of becoming increasingly digital.

Requirements

  • Studies in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or similar field.
  • Good working knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, related Apps & other social networking tools & platforms.
  • Some experience in managing social media accounts a distinct advantage.
  • Creative and flexible approach to work, and ability to work well within a team.
  • Verbal and written proficiency in English.
  • An interest in humanitarian issues.

3. Digital Marketing Intern

The Digital Marketing Intern at MSF Southern Africa will be instrumental in helping the organisation raise funds and lower costs using digital media strategies. The intern will be expected to contribute towards MSF’s objective of becoming increasingly digital.

Requirements

  • Studies in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or similar field
  • Basic understanding of digital marketing (SEO, SEM, display advertising, etc)
  • Experience in managing digital or social media campaigns a distinct advantage
  • The ability to apply analytical techniques to raw data
  • A strong interest in humanitarian issues
  • Creative and flexible approach to work, and ability to work well within a team
  • Proficiency in English, written and orally (including copywriting and proofreading skills)

4. Research Intern

MSF SA is looking for an intern to assist in analysing the internal and external challenges and opportunities within the Southern African context, taking into account political, social, and economic factors. The intern will be reporting directly to the General Director, who will utilise the research in close collaboration with the MSF SA Staff and Board to compile a 3-year strategic plan.

Requirements

  • Background in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science or related field
  • Excellent research and reporting skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Interest in the humanitarian field

5. Events Intern:

The intern will work in the Fundraising unit, along with the Donor Engagement Officer and Donor Development Coordinator to plan and manage a major event for current and potential major donors, as well as smaller major donor events and meetings during that period. He/she will also assist the fundraising team with development and design of materials, including event invitations, etc. as required and time permitting.

Requirements

  • Students or recent graduates seeking experience in fundraising and special events.
  • Some experience of events and interested in learning more about fundraising events
  • Ability to function well under pressure
  • Comfortable making cold calls and asking for sponsorships, donations and in-kind donations (training and scripts will be provided)
  • Thrive in high-pressure environments and be flexible with task assignments
  • Must be professional, passionate, and extremely detail-oriented.
  • A quick learner who is highly motivated and pro-active is a must.
  • Experience and training in online and document design, preferably using InDesign
